Performance Management Isarflow Benefits

Product Highlights

Monitoring, accounting and analysis of network traffic is a central challenge of network management in modern TCP/IP based networks. Classical network management systems (NMS) only give rudimentary views about overall traffic utilisation. However, they cannot supply detailed information about the applications that cause most traffic or which users or hosts occupy available bandwidths. In order to optimise performance, minimise operational costs, introduce IP based accounting and plan ahead for efficient enhancements it is essential to have details about all traffic patterns throughout the network.

The basis for a detailed analysis of traffic flows is NetFlow accounting. Originally developed by Cisco SystemsTM, this feature is now supported by many manufacturers of routers and layer-3 switches. NetFlow is simply activated for selected devices throughout a network. From then on they send information about traffic flows to an IsarFlow Server. Here it is pre-processed and stored in a central database. From this data the integrated IsarFlow Analyser can produce detailed and highly customisable reports and graphs for all kinds of traffic flows.

Key Benefits

IsarFlow is a highly flexible platform for detailed Analysis of NetFlow Data and offers a wide application range:

  • Different Analysis Modules provide detailed knowledge about the traffic patterns present in the networks, primarily in network planning and troubleshooting
  • Automated reports which can be sent via e-mail or stored on a central server. Of course all reports can be created individually as well.
  • Using NetFlow data an IP based accounting can be realised. IsarFlow offers a highly flexible accounting module in this area.
  • Security analyses for automatic recognition of viruses/worms being active in the network. The automatic threshold monitoring and alerting function provides even more security.
  • Distributed collectors can be deployed for scalability.

Key Features

Besides the IsarFlow Analyser and IsarFlow Collector(s) no additional hardware is needed. Another advantage is independency of physical interfaces. Introducing novel technologies to the network does not require new IsarFlow components.

Activating NetFlow is a matter of a few simple configuration commands.
